And So I Take Up Pen

By Peter Halstead

For Cath

And so I take up pen again
(Or rather fingers and their righteous
Keys) to fight off the beguiling skies,
To grapple real life with its
Unaffected pages, its wise
Delights and cultured kiss,
Its whimsical disguise,
To face the distant wits
Of talent and its light
With nothing in my hand
But an abyss, the clattering of fronds,
A blood moon on the land,
All the force and focus of the night
Which to my bright day corresponds.
