Darkness at Noon

By Peter Halstead

Floating in the middle of a clear blue
Sky, a hundred feet above its shining
Lessers, a palm sways above the ocean
View, the topside of its fronds

As green and cheerful as the trees beneath.
But the underside of the canopy, the
Part we see, is shaded by its upper
Sheath, by the splayed and waving

Parasols of its stately crown, surreal
As a de Chirico, braving
Its own shadow, framed in teal,
Dark fireworks for the world below.
