Green Flash III

By Peter Halstead

Before you go, infinity,
Come across the wave to me,

Melting on the turquoise reef,
Isolated from all grief,

Bone-white day beneath the sky,
Reflected in a dark mai tai,

Surfboards, torchlight, summer girls
Frosted in the water’s curls,

The sky above horizon’s knife
All I wanted from my life.

Orange-eyed, the syrup leaves
Birds transfixed beneath the eaves,

Sand as amber as my drink
(Which may dictate what I think).

Love, like sun, descends
From the world’s liquid ends,

Past and future, left and right,
Blowing down the surf to night,

Dreams spiral through the fronds,
Bouncing off umbrella wands.

Now, before the music starts
Or ice confines our frozen hearts,

Last light of the drowning sea,
Sweep across the beach to me.
