Sun Dogs
The sun went down tonight
In triplicate. As it set,
It left its mark on the ecliptic,
Green rings around each arc,
The green flash tripled
In advance, like the stations
Of the cross, clouds rippled
By its exaltations.
And then, run rout
By a green rainbow, the full
Circle of the sun at last put out
The ocean’s far horizon.
Three endings to the day,
Gaps in memory,
Or time lapses we replay
On a summery eve,
Optical illusions, haloes
Caused by sties or flaws
Inside the eye, or, who knows,
Misgivings in the skies.
