The Day Got Away from Us

By Peter Halstead

It snuck out through the bathroom window;
It walked right out the kitchen door;
Maybe it was what we said, but no,
It doesn’t like us anymore.

And not just Newark, not just Trenton—
Under cover of the rosy night
Something somewhere went and
Switched off all the world’s light.

It’s been occurring more and more
The way the light has faded:
Day never looked like this before—
Maybe somehow we mislaid it?

Or maybe light is somehow leased
(Illuminations don’t come cheap):
Our sun may be unpaid; at least
It’s only shut off when we sleep.
