Like a Hammer film series screenings

This spring, join us for New York, Phoenix, and Tucson screenings of our poem films from Haymarket Books' new anthology Like a Hammer: Poets on Mass Incarceration.

These screenings will feature our series of six films of poems from the anthology, created to accompany its launch. The films are performed by poets Evie Shockley, Vanessa Angélica Villareal, Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Randall Horton, and Sin à Tes Souhaits, directed by Jean Coleman, and produced by Diana Marie Delgado and Amy Holmes. Two of the screenings will also include three further poem films with anthology contributors John Murillo, Nicole Sealey, and Patrick Rosal, directed by Coleman and by Williams Rossa Cole.

  • On Thursday, March 20th, all nine films featuring poets of the anthology will screen at the University of Arizona's Poetry Center in Tucson, Arizona. Sin à Tes Souhaits, Roque Raquel Salas Rivera, and Vanessa Angélica Villarreal will read from the anthology. This event will be livestreamed as well. The Poetry Center will also offer a pop-up exhibition of the poem films in their library space, where they will be viewable on loop from March 18th through March 29th.
  • On Thursday, April 17th, all of the films will be screened at Poets House in New York City, accompanying a reading by Randall Horton, Angel Nafis, and Evie Shockley. A livestream will be hosted on Zoom. A film installation in the space will also be offered; check back for details.
  • And on Friday, May 2nd, Palabras Bilingual Bookstore in Phoenix, Arizona will screen the six films created for the anthology's launch. Further details on readers and a film installation will be posted here closer to the date.

We hope you'll be able to celebrate the launch of this powerful anthology with us!
